Things to do
Begin your villa holiday in Capri by experiencing the island in the best possible way - from the water! Taking a boat tour around Capri is a popular activity, whether you choose to join an organised tour or hire your own private guide.
Most depart from Capri’s main port, Marina Grande, then continue to take visitors past the famous rock formations of the island, including Faraglioni, Tiberius’ Leap, and Punta Carena. You may also make a stop at Capri’s world-famous Blue Grotto during your boat trip, however individual tours to the site also run too.
The Blue Grotto has been attracting attention from visitors ever since Roman times - emperor Tiberius loved it so much that he commissioned statues to be built to decorate it. The glow-in-the-dark quality comes from sunlight bouncing on the cave walls, causing the electric-blue water to seemingly glow. Jump into a small rowing boat to properly experience the magic.
Looking for epic viewpoints for those all important holiday snaps? You’re in luck - Capri is full of them. One of the most panoramic is the Pizzolungo trail, which takes you through the historic centre of Capri and along a footpath that hugs the southern coast of the island. You’ll be treated to spectacular views of the glistening sea, Sorrentine peninsula, and Faraglioni.
Head to the island’s second, smaller village of Anacapri for a quieter and more tranquil experience. The village sits at the highest point of the island, and the pretty lanes are lined with artisan workshops for you to peruse. You can also take the chairlift to the top of nearby Mount Solaro, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the entirety of Capri.
Best beaches
The island’s jagged, rocky coastline means beaches in Capri are few and far between but fear not, this rarity only makes them even more enticing.
If you’re arriving by boat, the clear water by Marina Grande is usually the first thing you’ll see, and the area is also home to a relaxing shallow beach too.
Nearby, Marina Piccola also has a couple of free, pebble-lined public beaches that are great for yacht-spotting. Walk down towards Torrena Saracena for a quieter experience.
Head to the northern edge of the island for Capri’s most popular beach, Bagni di Tiberio, which offers both pebbled and sandy spots ideal for strolling, sunbathing, and general relaxation.
Towards the southern edge of Capri the beaches tend to be a little less crowded - ideal if you’re looking for a more secluded spot. We recommend Marina di Mulo - just arrive early to make the most of the sunshine.
Food and drink
Here’s the part you’ve all been waiting for: what are the best things to eat and drink in Capri? And where to try them?
Like most Italian towns, Capri lends its name to a popular national dish - the Caprese salad. No doubt you’ve probably tried this mixture of mozzarella, tomato and basil back on home soil, but there’s nothing like tasting the fresh flavours in the land that invented it. You’ll find the dish in every local restaurant on the island.
Got a sweet tooth? You’re in for a treat when visiting Capri. The Torta Caprese is another local delicacy, a dense flourless chocolate cake made with toasted ground almonds and dark chocolate. Tales go that either frightened cooks (startled by the Mafia!) or forgetful sisters are the reasons behind the lack of flour in the cake…
Capri also has its fair share of pizzerias, being just a stone's throw away from the birthplace of pizza, Naples. One of the best places to sample it is at Aurora, where the pizza all’acqua is made using a 100-year old recipe.
Looking for another unique dining experience? Head to Da Paolino, where the fragrance of over 130 lemon trees accompany your meal. There’s also an excellent selection of lemon flavoured desserts to choose from.
Why it's perfect for families
Babies: Travelling to Capri with a baby or toddler? You’re in luck: kids under 3 ride free on all the ferry routes, and many of the public transportation options across the island too. Anacapri is generally considered more child-friendly than Capri town (there’s a large playground) and Marina Grande is the beach where most of the island's children learn to swim.
Kids: If your child is already accustomed to the water, Capri is an exciting place to holiday as a family. There are loads of snorkelling spots, pebbly beaches for swimming, and the best way to explore the island is on the water too. Journey to the Blue Grotto for free if your kid is under six!
Teens: No doubt your teens already have their own ideas of what a visit to Italy entails, and Capri promises quintessential Italian living at its finest. Being older, they’ll be more suited to completing the hikes across the island with you, snapping their way across Capri’s famed hotspots.
Top tips
Visit the Blue Grotto between the hours of 11am and 2pm, when the sun is strongest and the blue sea gives off the strongest ‘glow’.
Did you know there’s also a Green Grotto AND a White Grotto? Less busier than their more popular sibling, they also have free entry and crystal clear water.
Order a glass of the locally grown wine with your meal - vines have been cultivated on the island for nearly 3,000 years, and make for a refreshing, crisp drink.

Punta Carena. When in Capri, do as the locals day! This coastal spot is popular with natives, where deep waters are great for diving and swimming. There’s also the Punta Carena lighthouse for iconic holiday snaps.
Capri travel: Getting there and around
Experience island living in the best possible way - on foot and by boat, of course! Capri is easily explored on public transport, though you can't beat a day on the water, admiring the many rock formations, too.
By boat
Capri doesn’t have an airport, so you’ll most likely be flying into Naples and from here, catching a boat to the island. Arguably the most stylish way to arrive at your villa holiday!
By bus
Buses operate across the island, and are a relatively cheap and easy way to get around. They are more like minibuses, rather than the big double deckers you may be used to, carrying just a few dozen people each time. However, these usually depart every 15-20 minutes, with more during high season too.
By taxi
All the taxis on Capri are open top and can fit up to 7 passengers, meaning that when split between a large group, the fare may even be cheaper than what you’re used to. Drivers also offer daily rates if you want to spend a day exploring the island with your own private ride.
By funicular
As well as the buses, there’s also the funicular - a unique way to navigate Capri island. It runs between Marina Grande and Piazzetta in the above Capri town, taking just a few minutes to complete the journey. Again, these run every 15 minutes or so.
Top tips
We don’t recommend hiring a car when holidaying in Capri - non-resident vehicles are actually prohibited for much of the high season, and there aren’t a great number of parking spaces to choose from.
Want a true Italian experience? Hire a scooter! You’ll find rental agencies in the main areas of the town. Just remember to brush up on the rules of the road beforehand!
